Is your garden soil  PH balanced to give your plants the best opportunity to thrive? Soil on the Surf Coast and around Geelong often needs enriching or balancing out to give plants the conditions they need! Soil PH will affect the bacteria and fungi growing in the soil, and PH-balanced soil is needed to ensure the plants can ingest nutrients properly. PH is measured from zero (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline, or basic). Neutral PH is rated 7.0. Bring in a sample of your garden soil and we can test its PH level. We can help you balance it out if required so that your plants are given the best chance to bloom.

Our PH tests at SouthPoint Garden Supplies will give you an approximate indication of your soil’s PH. If it’s too acidic, you can add lime or ashes from the woodstove to balance it out.  If the soil is too base, adding vinegar or spaghnum moss can counter-act this. Some plants, such as blueberries, tomatoes, strawberries and potatoes, prefer slightly more acidic soil, while asparagus, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and okra thrive in alkaline soil.

SouthPoint Garden Supplies’ custom blended soils, which include organic aged compost, cow manure, mushroom mulch, loam and/or propagating sand, can be tailored to maximise your garden’s production levels. Top it off with a water-saving leaf mulch, and your garden will be bursting full of veggies and flowers for summer.
